Six nature lovers enjoyed their exploration of Steve's 40-acre mountain property on Friday. We were there to identify the native wildflowers and birds around the seasonal lake.

As Steve greeted us, he added, "There weren't many flowers," but our group managed to ID about 40.

Eva was great at identifying flowers, birds, and butterflies. Kay ID'ed Birds by sight and sound and made a list.

Sandhill crane, robin, red-winged blackbird, vesper sparrow, killdeer, spotted sandpiper, mallard, tree swallow, chipping sparrow,  song sparrow, dark-eyed junco, olive-sided flycatcher, and black-headed grosbeak.

The large Sandhill Crane impressed us with its bugling call as it circled the lake.

The weather was sunny and cool in the 50's, ideal for nature identifying.

Kay also kept a photographic record of the day's Flora. My favorites were the Bleeding Heart found all around the property, and the Prairie Smoke, or Old Man's Beard, found by the thousands in the eastern fields.

It was a great day in a special location.
